EASTS 2003
Report of the Local Organizing Committee

The Fifth Conference of Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies (EASTS'03) was held successfully at the Fukuoka International Congress Center in Fukuoka from October 29th to November 1st, 2003 with 464 delegates participating. (275 from Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nederland, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, UK and USA and 189 from Japan). With the theme of "Connecting Eastern Asia through Better Transportation", the conference was able to provide good occasions to exchange useful information in all aspects of transportation studies. Fukuoka had a great honor to organize the first conference of EASTS in Japan. Executive committee of Local Organizing Committee made every effort to success the conference.

The overall technical program included 93 technical sessions and two special sessions. The total number of participates in technical program is about 2,000 persons including speakers and audiences and each session had lively discussions. Also, luncheon meetings were held on every day with lunch in this conference. The histories and the future prospects of airports, ports, railway, buses, and urban development in Fukuoka and other regions in Kyushu were introduced in luncheon meetings with 780 participants.

Moreover, Symposium was held on October 30th. The topic was " the future of high-speed rail projects in Asia". Issues of high-speed rail projects and their prospects in China, Korea, Taiwan and Japan were presented and discussed.

Because of great number of presented papers, this year's Journal and Proceedings were issued on CD-ROM for the first time in EASTS' conferences. The EASTS' 03 Journal had 3360 pages and Proceedings had 1807 pages. Journal included 246 papers selected by International Scientific Committee. And other 150 papers were published in the Proceedings.

In Technical tours, four courses were arranged providing opportunities for participants to experience various transportation facilities, urban development project, and traditional facilities in Northern Kyushu Area. A total of 172 persons took part in these Technical Tours.

On behalf of all the members of our Executive committee of Local Organizing Committee, I wish to express our sincere gratitude of all of you who have so actively participated in the Conference to make it such a success.
